What does baking soda do for a pool? ›

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate is naturally alkaline, with a pH of 8. When you add baking soda to your pool water, you will raise both the pH and the alkalinity, improving stability and clarity. Many commercial pool products for raising alkalinity utilize baking soda as their main active ingredient.

It diminishes chlorine's ability to keep your pool's water clear, clean, and blue. A low alkalinity level can also cause eye burning and cause excessive metal corrosion and potentially stain your pool finish. Fortunately, it's easy to avoid these problems.

There are three main reasons behind high alkalinity levels of your pool. Firstly, when the oil, sunblock or lotion you use during a swim get mixed into the water. Secondly, if your pool water source has a high alkaline content. Lastly, some pool owners may shock their pool too often after hosting a pool party.

If the pH gets higher than 7.8, the water is becoming too alkaline. When water is too alkaline, it reduces the effectiveness of chlorine — the pool chemical that kills pathogens. Water with a pH that's too high also can cause skin rashes, cloudy water and scaling on pool equipment.

Like with disinfectant levels, make sure you check pH daily. Whenever pH drops below 7.2, add 3-4 lbs. of ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda per 10,000 gallons of water to raise the pH. If after a day or so, the pH has not stabilized and drops below 7.2 again, add another 4 lbs.

Adding too much shock: Most pool shock (cal-hypo) is naturally high-alkaline, so overdoing it can bump up your total alkalinity levels.

The main problem with low pool alkalinity is that it can be damaging to the walls and surfaces of your pool. You may start to notice cracks and pits in these surfaces. Any metallic surfaces will begin to corrode and become discolored until they eventually dissolve entirely.

Because pH and alkalinity adjustments affect one another, you should always correct the total alkalinity before pH. This is because proper total alkalinity will act as a buffer for pH, helping to prevent fluctuations in pH levels.

You can easily raise a pool's alkalinity by using a chemical called sodium bicarbonate which is, baking soda. The recommended dosage is 1.5 pounds of sodium bicarbonate per 10,000 gallons of water.

But anyone with a pool on a CO₂ system already knows, the pool's alkalinity increases over time without adding sodium bicarb or soda ash. This is a verified fact.

Yes, chlorine shock does affect the pH levels of the water. When chlorine is added to water, it reacts with the organic matter present, such as sweat, oils, and any urine in the pool. This chemical reaction causes the pH level to rise, making the water more alkaline.

A pH level of 7 means that water is neutral; above 7 means the water is alkaline, while below 7 indicates acidity. Aim for a pH level of between 7 and 7.6. If the water pH is higher than 8, anyone who swims in the pool is at risk of skin rashes, while a pH of lower than 7 can sting swimmers' eyes.
